15) Entertainment or Popular Culture

Entertainment and Popular Culture

Entertainment and popular culture shapes our society and us as individuals. Tv and media shaped who each of us are as individuals making us who we are today. Shows we watched and games we played when we were younger built bits and pieces of us and our characters.

As a person who was born in the very early 2000's (specifically 2002), I did not get into YouTube until I had an iPod Touch at the age of 10 or 11. Up until then, I had tv and Nintendo DS to keep me entertained. I know it sounds dramatic but when I found Markiplier on YouTube, it changed my life.

Markiplier is a YouTuber who started making videos in 2012 who is now one of the biggest YouTube content creators. He was even nominated for gamer of the year in 2022. He became famous for his Let's Plays and playing horror games, one of which being Five Nights at Freddy's.

When I and a few other million found him, he was young as well. We grew up watching his as he grew as well. Watching him week after week, month after month playing game after game. Same wonderful guy with different content each time keeping all of us wanting more.

I learned, from watching Markiplier, what games to buy, what games were not good, and which were. He was so genuine with his fans and was actually thankful for his viewers supporting him along the way. He recognized that he could not be where he was without all of these millions of people backing him wholeheartedly.

After watching Markiplier for so long, you get used to hearing the phrase "and I will see you in the next video, Buh-bye!" It got ingrained in our brains and became such a pivotal point in our culture.

Markiplier was one of the YouTubers that made Five Nights at Freddy's so popular. If a new Five Nights at Freddy's game came out, it was expected that he play it. Other YouTubers would have playthroughs of it but those who were dedicated to Mark would wait for him to post a video first before watching anyone else.

When the Five Nights at Freddy's movie was announced, memes circulated on the internet saying that a picture of Markiplier would be in the top right corner of the movie screen making it look like one of Mark's iconic videos. The movie was not necessarily made for younger kids but for the kids who had grown up with the game and grew up watching Markiplier.

Because Markiplier was such a big YouTuber who displayed many games and many different genres of content, he led his followers to find different things they liked and to find different subcultures. These likes, niches, and subcultures make who we are. Markiplier made that for our generation and other generations of the same.

All this being said, Markiplier was just one example, from personal experience, how entertainment and pop culture shape our society and who we all are today. Now true that there are more obvious examples such as tv and music, but this specific example proves that somethings as small as one person in a sea of millions can affect a multitude of people's lives.
